Two Soilmec PSM-16 rigs working in unison in London

First opened as ‘The People’s Palace’ in 1873, Alexandra Palace provided the Victorians with a great environment and recreation centre. Just sixteen days after it’s opening, the Palace was destroyed by a fire. Less than two years later a new palace opened to the public. In 1980 the Palace caught fire a second time, restoration and development work began soon after and was re-opened in 1988.

Part of the upgrade is the erection of a new floor for the ice rink. Due to the weight of the construction, piling was required to support the floor slab. The Soilmec PSM-16 in CFA low headroom configuration is the ideal machine for the restricted conditions of the site. The access was through the ice rink doors, measuring 3.3m high and 2.4m wide, only allowing a rig the size of the PSM-16 to pass. Inside the building height restrictions were in place due to the roof structure being a minimum of 7.6m, this was overcome by using PSM-16 with 5.8m with the low headroom mast of 5.8m length.

Both rigs are performing 450mm dia open bore sectional auger piles, down to a depth of 19m, which has been quick and easy work for the PSM-16’s with their 42kNm max. rotary torque and 19.5 ton hoist force. The Soilmec PSM-16 is a very powerful, yet compact rig, meeting job site demands where other larger rigs can not comply to the restricted conditions.
