Soilmec equipment at work for the third set of locks in Panama Canal Expansion Project

Soilmec equipment, in synergy with the knowledge of Trevi Galante (Trevi Group), awarded a contract for the foundation works on the third locks project on behalf of the international consortium GUPC (Grupo Unidos por el Canal, S.A.) executed the foundation piles, the diaphragm walls, the injections and the soil investigations necessary to foundation structures that have to give a solid support, a good stability and a waterproof guarantee in the creation of a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal doubling its waterways capacity.
The works includes the construction of deep piles for locks, docks and bridges for an amount of more than 14000 linear meters of ground drilled with the large diameter bored pile method, mostly cased. For those works were used the medium-large size hydraulic drilling rigs Soilmec SR-60, SR-70, R-825 and R-930. Trevi Galante was also awarded 9000 square meters of soil to be sealed by a plastic concrete diaphragm wall. The panels were executed using the Soilmec hydraulic grab BH-8.
Moreover, Soilmec micro-drilling rigs SM-8 and SM-5 and the injection plant GS1 and GI ET8 drilled and injected the injection curtain to guarantee a waterproof sealing of all rock cracks in the foundation of the Borinquen Dam, part of the Panama project, that will allow navigation access through the Pacific Approach Channel to the new Pacific Locks.
Finally on the PAC-4 project, the most complex expansion after the design and build of the new set of locks that will create an access channel linking the new Pacific locks with the Canal's existing Gaillard Cut (the narrowest stretch of the Panama Canal), Soilmec SM-8 and SM-5 and the injection plant GS1 and GI ET8 were used for drilling and grouting for the realization of a curtain of waterproofing of the dam.

SR-45 ADV in LHR version

The Soilmec LHR quick conversion kit is specially designed for works in low space condition, under the electric power lines or bridges, as well as existing structures. The SR-45 ADV in LHR version is designed especially for working in limited headroom conditions.
Thanks to the new Soilmec concept design, the rig has extremely high performance in cased or uncased bored piles technology and can be optionally configured in continuous flight auger version. The base machine has been designed to offer more comfort and safety on the jobsite. The Cummins QSB6.7 Tier4 Diesel engine deliver an impressive output to 201 kW (269 HP) while meeting more efficiency and flexibility.
Despite its size, with an operating weight of just 38 tons, the SR-45 LHR is fitted with the outstanding spaciuos H-CAB with sliding doors, powerful air-conditioner system, air-suspended seat and adjustable DMS touch screen 12’’ monitor. Operator catwalks complete with handrails and LCD cameras monitor have been design to allows a total control over a greater working area making you feel safer.
The rotary head, with a torque capacity of 185 kNm, has been lightened and resized guaranteeing lower force losses in extraction and less obstruction on site. The crowd system is operated by a fast and heavy-duty 2500 mm stroke cylinder with higher effective crowd and extraction force value.
In LDP configuration the height of the rig is 8,5 m and allows the use of 5 m long kelly bar reaching a drilling depth of 19,3 m. The maximum diameter executable is 1500 mm along the mast and 2500 mm removing the bottom mast section. the SR-45 LHR has a transport weight under the 40 tons and can be transported complete with the mast folded keeping the kelly bar fitted.
