Soilmec rigs at work for the renovation of the Franchi stadium

 

The renovation work on the Artemio Franchi stadium is progressing without interruption to ensure the delivery of the new facility to Florence, fans, and team as quickly as possible.

Designed by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi in 1930 and built between 1930 and 1932, the stadium was one of the most innovative architectures on the national scene at the time and represents one of the most significant applications of reinforced concrete in Italian public architecture.

The stadium, initially called “G. Berta” and later “Comunale” before becoming “Artemio Franchi,” is an example of the search for a balance between functional program, structural calculation, and architectural invention. The combination of these three elements has given rise to an architecture that, thanks to its remarkable technical innovations and aesthetic solutions, has contributed to the renewal of design culture from the 1920s in Italy and worldwide.

The part of the redevelopment work funded by the public funds of the PNRR must be completed by October 31, 2026, a date carefully chosen because by the end of October, UEFA inspectors will have completed inspections of the facilities nominated to host the Euro 2032 matches.

The work involving Soilmec machinery is currently concentrated in the Fiesole curve sector, with piling work that will support the construction of the new grandstand, which is scheduled to begin between the end of April and the beginning of May 2025.

Two Soilmec drilling rigs are operational in the Fiesole curve area these weeks: an SR-65 and an SR-35, belonging respectively to our clients Europea 92 and Taras Pali, subcontractors of the Nuovo Stadio Franchi consortium (created between COBAR S.p.a. and SAC s.p.a), which won the contract from the Municipality of Florence, the owner of the facility.

The current work involves the construction of a sub-foundation consisting of 135 bored piles with a diameter of 1200 mm, with a depth varying between 22 and 29 meters.
